The usual way to connect WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger to a platform is to authorise that platform’s app to manage your account. It is convenient, but the permissions over your channels end up inside an app that isn’t yours.
MuseRelay offers another route: BYOK (Bring Your Own Keys). You create your own app in Meta for Developers, generate your credentials and connect them to MuseRelay.
What you gain
- The permissions are yours. Your app is the only one with access to your WhatsApp number, your Instagram account or your Facebook page. You can see what has been granted and revoke it from your Meta dashboard whenever you like, without asking anyone.
- Independence. Your app isn’t shared with other businesses: what other customers of the platform do has no effect on your limits or your standing with Meta.
- WhatsApp from day one. Your WhatsApp app works without waiting for any Meta review. On Instagram and Messenger, to talk to anyone, Meta has to approve your app’s messaging permissions (and verify your business); until then it only works with accounts that have a role in it.
- No lock-in. If you ever stop using MuseRelay, your channels stay in your app: disconnect them here and connect them wherever you want.
What still goes through MuseRelay
For the assistant to reply, messages reach MuseRelay through the webhook you set up in your app. BYOK doesn’t change that: what it changes is who controls the connection with Meta.
What arrives stays in Europe: messages are stored on our servers in the European Union (Germany), photos, audio and documents are stored encrypted with AES-256, and your Meta keys are also stored encrypted and never shown in the dashboard. The AI models run in European data centres. We explain it in detail in Privacy and security of your data.
What you need
- A Meta for Developers account and an app created there.
- WhatsApp: your number on the WhatsApp Cloud API and a permanent access token.
- Instagram: a Business or Creator account, its ID and a token.
- Messenger: a Facebook page, its ID and a page token.
- For all of them: your app’s App Secret (required). We use it to check that every incoming message really comes from Meta.
When you save the channel, MuseRelay gives you the webhook URL and verify token to paste into your app. The guide Connect Instagram and Messenger with BYOK walks you through it, showing where each value is.
Is it for me?
If you are comfortable with technical dashboards, or have someone who is, BYOK is the option with the most control and privacy. If you would rather not touch anything in Meta, we are preparing one-click guided connection, where authorising your account will be enough. We compare both modes in this guide.
